Gmail has long been the alternative to professional (and often expensive) office suites for a puny business. Instead of buying an office suite, Google has an email platform and online word processing instruments. Additionally, Gmail lets you talk directly with clients and customers who are in your contact list. You can even have movie calls with your business clients through Gmail.

1. Log in to Gmail using your username and password. All of your contacts show up on the bottom left-hand side of the screen in the talk window. Green circles beside someone’s name indicates that they are available to talk, and a green movie camera beside their name indicates that they are online and have the movie talking plugin installed. If you don’t have the movie icon beside your name, you haven’t installed the movie plugin and should proceed to Step Two; otherwise, skip to Step Three.

Two. Download the Google voice and movie talk plugin (see Resources). Close all browser windows, and then double-click the downloaded file to begin the installation. Once finish, open your browser again and log back in to Gmail. You’ll now see the movie icon beside your name in the talk list.

Three. Click on the name of a contact with whom you wish to have a movie talk. If they don’t have the camera icon beside their name, click to open a talk and then click the “Options” button in the talk window. Select “Invite to Movie Call.” That person is sent an invitation to download the Google voice and movie plugin. They may go offline for a moment while the program installs.

Four. Click the movie camera icon beside the person’s name, and then choose “Embark a Hangout.” Google calls its movie conferences “Hangouts.” These are more than a movie call. They also include screen-sharing software and access to Google Drive, the online word processing suite, so that you can share work with someone across a hangout.

Five. Click on the “Add people” icon — symbolized by a person and a plus sign against a crimson background — in the top left corner of the movie call to add more contacts from your Gmail contacts list to this Hangout. Type the contact’s name, and click “Add people” to send online parties an invitation to this Hangout. You can have as many as ten participants in a Hangout at any one time.
